We’ve all had it before, and for some, it’s worse than others. Bad breath. Also known as halitosis, bad breath can be a real damper in social setting and may leave you feeling self-conscious and like a social pariah. Our New Jersey cosmetic dentist and the team here at the office know just how debilitating some cases of bad breath can be. For that reason, we’d like to go over some of the most basic causes of bad breath.

Bad Dental Hygiene

It should come as no surprise, but if you don’t take care of your teeth, that will have an affect on your breath. If you don’t brush or floss regularly and don’t visit your dentist for regular check-ups, you are more likely to have bad breath than not. Be sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day, to floss daily, and to visit your dentist. Using a tongue scraper may also be advisable.

Dry Mouth

If your mouth is dry, it creates an ideal condition for the bacteria that causes bad breath to thrive. For this reason, it is important that you drink water a few times a day to help keep your mouth moist and the saliva flowing.

Smoking Cigars and Cigarettes

Smoking is bad for your lungs, bad for your heart, and it’s also obviously bad for your breath. It can cause tooth decay as well as oral cancers on top of all other deleterious health conditions. Be sure to quite smoking.

Drinking Alcoholic Beverages in Excess

Alcohol dries out the mouth, and since dry mouths are ideal for the bacteria that cause bad breath, drinking in excess is bound to cause some level of bad breath. Be sure to drink in moderation and to have some water in between drinks.

Issues with the Throat

Problems with the tonsils and other issues involving the throat can all lead to bad breath. Be sure to meet with your doctor about these sorts of problems.

Digestive Tract Problems

As with the throat, issues with the stomach and other parts of your digestive system can lead to halitosis. Your doctor will also be able to help you in these matters.

Serious Diseases and Other Health Problems

Sometimes bad breath isn’t a problem in itself but rather a symptom of a serious disease or health condition of some kind. Be sure to discuss these issues with your dentist or your doctor.
